Bayer Leverkusen dominates Wolfburg winning 2-0

By: j | November 1st, 2008

In front of their home supporters Bayer Leverkusen dominated Wolfsburg on the way to a 2-0 victory.

The tale of the match might be what we didn’t see as Felix Magath made a brilliant managerial decision calling upon Cristian Zaccardo for his first start in the back-line along with Andrea Barzagli but only nineteen minutes into the match that plan was thrown aside when Bosnia and Herzegovina international Zvjezdan Misimović went limping off. The loss of the great play-maker had a untold impact and in-truth die Wölfe attack was rarely seen.

The match went to the break scoreless with Werkself creating a number of scoring opportunities, each turned back by solid back line work of Wolfsburg. The score was finally broken twelve minutes after the break with Tranquillo Barnetta hitting a low shot to the corner from twenty meters, giving Leverkusen the 1-0 lead. With twenty-five minutes remaining the Swiss international’s corner was headed-in by Stefan Kießling to bring the score 2-0. Wolfsburg had a few chances to draw a goal back but each fell short.

Certainly Wolfsburg supporters will be disappointed by the result but their were many positives in the play of the back-line and in-time it will help push the club forward in its European efforts. The problem and a notable one was the loss of lynch-pin Zvjezdan Misimović as without him, the attack turned to a modest fizzle and allowed Leverkusen to challenge at will.

Wolfsburg returns to action against Heerenveen in the UEFA Cup next Thursday.

I watched the game on a stream. Since I’m a Bayer fan, I’m well-pleased with the result but Wolfsburg definitely frustrated the Bayer attack for a very long period. I despaired of the team ever scoring.

    All the best against Heerenveen.
