FC Köln match review
By: j | August 17th, 2008Felix Magath led Die wölfe to a solid start of the Bundesliga campaign with a 2-1 victory over FC Köln.
As expected, the newly promoted Cologne club, led by manager Christoph Daum, was quite a handful and in-fact nearly scored in the opening minutes of the match when Sergiu Radu provided a perfect cross to Milivoje Novakovič. However while the finishing of that chance fell short it was merely a warning of the same combination as Novakovič netted the first goal of the match at the twenty minute mark giving die geißböcke the 1-0 lead, which they took into the break.
Reinforcements were called upon, with Sascha Riether (Cristian Zaccardo) and Mahir Sağlık (Makoto Hasebe) entering after the break with the intent of pushing forward more. The response was quick and Christian Gentner, not known for his predatory skills, snapped up a rebound off a Sascha Riether shot, bringing the match level at the forty-eight minute mark. Surprisingly, the back-line of Wolfsburg changed the complexion of the match as after that, the play was mostly in FC Köln end. With twelve minutes left in regular time, Zvjezdan Misimović, attacked down the right channel, alluded to a cross and drove splendid shot to the inside post of ‘keeper Faryd Mondragón to give Wolfsburg the 2-1 lead and the victory.
With the story of the die wölfe und die geißböcke now complete (please note, I did not once say how “a wolf preys upon the billy goat” or that “the wolf grabbed the goat by its horns”), Wolfsburg travel to Bochum to face Marcel Koller’s squad which suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Karlsruher SC. Marcel is a superb developer of young talent and will have his squad ready, so it cannot be overlooked.
