Niedersachsen derby summary
By: j | December 7th, 2008
The Niedersachsen derby between Hannover 96 and VfL Wolfsburg didn’t disappoint as both sides put forth a brilliant effort with Die Wölfe winning 2-1 at Volkswagen Arena. Hannover’s swarming defensive play thwarted the Wolfsburg attack until Cristian Zaccardo scored his first goal for Wolfsburg after coming from Serie A Palermo in the summer. With Zvjezdan Misimović playing a slick 1-2, the ex-Palermo man opened the scoring from five meters two minutes past the hour. Opportunities were rare and just before the hour mark Jiří Štajner brought the match level as he re-directed Konstantin Rausch’s cross into the net. Unfortunately for Czech Republic international Štajner, he was the unfortunate victim of a own goal as his attempted clearance of Zvjezdan Misimović’s free kick found the visiting sides net only four minutes later. The match ended with Hannover 96 playing a man down as ‘keeper Florian Fromlowitz was red-carded for bringing Edin Džeko down in the area albeit a questionable call. Surprisingly Edin’s penalty attempt was held back by Jan Rosenthal who had stepped up as ‘keeper but without another attempt Wolfsburg held for the 2-1 victory.
Now seventh in the Bundesliga table with twenty-six points, Wolfsburg returns to Bundesliga play next Saturday against Werder Bremen.
