poor effort ends Wolfsburg UEFA Cup run

By: j | February 26th, 2009

Although Felix Magath promised a top-notch effort by Wolfsburg in the return match against Paris Saint-Germain in Volkswagen Arena, it failed to materialize as die Wölfe embarrassed themselves with a positively dreadful performance in route to a 3-1 humiliation.

With PSG manager Paul Le Guen taking a calculated risk by leaving Claude Makélélé, Ludovic Giuly and Guillaume Hoarau out of the lineup, Wolfsburg had a clear-cut opportunity to make up for the two goal deficit from the opening leg. However after a missed early chances, Wolfsburg was rarely a threat going forward and the visitors dominated a pithy performance by the home side. PSG took the lead thirty-eight minutes into the match when Péguy Luyindula converted from the spot, following Jan Šimůnek being adjudged to bringing down Jérôme Rothen. The margin was doubled on the hour in a amateurish piece of defending as an unmarked and unchallenged Jérôme Rothen scored from the edge of the area. Three minutes later Japan international Makoto Hasebe showed great heart and he cut the margin in half as he overpowered the Parisians defenders and he went into the box. Ten minutes later poor defending cost resulted in PSG’s third coal as Clément Chantôme’s free-kick was nodded in by Péguy Luyindula to bring the match to its final 3-1 conclusion.

Wolfsburg returns to play on Sunday against Hamburger SV.
