Rapid Bucureşti UEFA Cup battle

By: j | September 17th, 2008

I am going to be very straight and up-front about the Wolfsburg – Rapid Bucureşti UEFA Cup match later today.

Wolfburg is facing what I consider to be one of the most under-rated clubs in the UEFA Cup and will need to be at their best to get by. Just as Roma found out with CFR Cluj in the Champions League, the quality of play in the Romania’s Liga 1 is extremely high and many of the clubs are capable of defeating the best in the world. Truthfully the performance of the Cluj squad was not a surprise to me and I consider Wolfsburg the underdog against Rapid Bucureşti. That might upset or shock Die Wölfe supporters but its the honest truth and if they play as haphazardly defensively as they have within Bundesliga action, it will be nauseating evening for fans at the Volkswagen Arena.

In the the attack Montenegro capped striker Radomir Đalović (English spelling Radomir Djalovich) is teamed with a formidable Brazilian trio of Césinha, Júlio César and Juliano Spadacio who will attack to no end. Defensively they are one of the best in the league and are led by Romanian capped internationals Costin Lazăr and Marius Constantin and will not surrender goals easily.

Wolfsburg has issued the following as its “possible line-up”:
Benaglio – Riether, Ricardo Costa, Barzagli, M.Schäfer, Josue, Hasebe, Gentner, Dejagah, Misimovic, Grafite

I will report on the match as it concludes.
