Vfl Bochum match review
By: j | August 24th, 2008After free-falling to a two goal deficit Felix Magath must have thought he was replaying last year’s disaster when die Wölfe gave up four unanswered goal in route to a 5-3 drubbing. However this year is quite different already as in the face of adversity, Wolfsburg scratched and clawed its way back to a 2-2 draw.
First half play was highly physical from box-to-box with scoring opportunities few and far between. However the Marcel Koller’s VfL Bochum took the lead at the twelve minute mark as the always dangerous Stanislav Šesták found the back of the net off a perfect 1-2 passing combination from Daniel Imhof. The tight, physical play continued throughout the half with nary a legitimate finish on goal and the home squad took the lead into the break.
With Mahir Sağlık in at the half for Cristian Zaccardo, Felix Magath revised the match tactics and pushed forward aggressively. However it was the home squad that continued to apply the pressure. It looked to be a very long afternoon for die Wölfe supporters when Mimoun Azaouagh’s cross was headed-in to give Bochum a resounding 2-0 advantage at the fiftieth minute. However only a minute later when Marcel Schäfer’s cross careened off Ricardo Costa and past the Bochum’s ‘keeper Daniel Fernandes (recall the Canadian who doesn’t play for Canada). At the sixty-ninth minute, off a splendid pass of Zvjezdan Misimović, Mahir Sağlık drew the match level at two, where it concluded, although Wolfsburg missed ample opportunities to come away with the win as well as goal being brought back with an offside call.
It was an important point to earn and leaves die Wölfe fourth in the early season table. Next week is Eintracht Frankfurt, to which I’ll be posting an opponent review shortly.

I think Cristian Zaccardo and Andrea Barzagli have both done a solid job in a very difficult situation. They face a difficult challenge as this is Wolfsburg’s weakness and have a lot of ground to make up for.
