Wolfsburg defeat Hansa Rostock 5-1 in DFB Pokal
By: j | January 28th, 2009
Wolfsburg advance to the final eight of the DFB Pokal with a solid 5-1 victory over Hansa Rostock. In defense of the second division side, the scoreline is a morsel deceiving as Grafite added two goals in the final moments of the match and for the most part Dieter Eilts’ Rostock side put up a great front.
The match was scoreless till two minutes before the hour mark when Grafite was provided a brilliant set-up by Bosnia and Herzegovina international Zvjezdan Misimović and sent the ball into the net. The visitors to Volkswagen Arena were the unfortunate Kai Bülow own-goal seven minutes later but Mario Fillinger drew one back at the sixty-eighth minute. With eleven minutes remaining Christian Gentner’s one man effort was concluded with a perfect finish, restoring Wolfsburg’s two goal margin. Grafite added a goal from the spot with four minutes remaining and his third of the day as time wound down to bring the match to a 5-1 final score. The match marked an admirable debut of Peter Pekarík who has recently joined Wolfsburg from MŠK Žilina.
While Hansa Rostock loss this match with a very unflattering score, this was not the work of a troubled second division side and hopefully this marks the start of a good second half for the club on the Baltic.
Wolfsburg returns to Bundesliga action this Saturday against Köln.
