Wolfsburg v PSG UEFA Cup match preview
By: j | February 17th, 2009Leading into Wolfsburg’s UEFA Cup match against PSG at Parc des Princes, Felix Magath will be without the services of Grafite who underwent knee surgery last Friday as well as long-term absence Ashkan Dejagah.
New signing Peter Pekarík is Cup-tied from his appearances with MŠK Žilina before signing during the transfer season and his absence could be challenge as Sascha Riether is questionable. Cristian Zaccardo is ready although the manager appears to have pushed him out of the picture of late. Former-Vissel Kobe man Yoshito Ōkubo will pair up with Bosnia and Herzegovina internationals Edin Džeko and Zvjezdan Misimović in the attack. To exploit PSG’s particular weakness in attacking on set pieces, Makoto Hasebe would be a wise addition to the starting eleven.
Parisian manager Paul Le Guen has unquestionably prioritized domestic competition and with the club now in second place of Ligue 1, it is unclear whether he will take a more aggressive stance with his lineup for the match. In previous UEFA Cup matches he has rested some of his normal starting eleven and paired Péguy Luyindula with Mateja Kežman at striker but the Serbian international is presently suspended and young star Guillaume Hoarau is nursing a sore knee. In addition to this Grégory Bourillon is likely to miss with an injury and it is questionable what type of lineup the French side will show.
The match has a peculiar makeup, with Wolfsburg troubled on the road against a side questionably putting its best effort forward. The greatest clue to the match will come in the hour preceding the start as lineups will reveal how les Rouge et Bleu will approach the match.
